Anxiety can be caused by a medical condition or the use of addictive substances.

Among substances, alcohol plays the biggest role. Sometimes even small amounts of alcohol consumed consistently can trigger anxiety. If alcohol is completely stopped, its harmful effects disappear. It has been observed that people who quit drinking typically experience anxiety attacks, and these effects have been seen to last for nearly two years.

During one study, it was found that after quitting alcohol, about half of the participants developed anxiety disorders, and among them, most suffered from fear-related and social phobias. Sometimes anxiety may also be due to a medical illness — especially hormone-related disorders like thyroid problems, etc., which can also cause anxiety.

Various life disruptions and emotional hardships can also cause anxiety. In today’s times, financial problems have made most people’s lives miserable, and that is a major source of anxiety. In young people, anxiety often arises from social interactions, undue criticism from others, or dissatisfaction with their body image. Among elderly people, memory loss can also lead to anxiety.

During an anxiety disorder, stress increases, and typically the following symptoms are present: headache, sweating, muscle tension, rapid heartbeat, feeling panicked, and elevated blood pressure. All of these factors contribute to fatigue in the patient.

For a diagnosis of anxiety disorder, these symptoms must persist for at least six months, since this disorder cannot be confirmed through laboratory tests.

Final Thoughts:

The key aspect of treatment is bringing lifestyle changes. These include exercising, regulating sleep, reducing caffeine intake (tea, coffee), and quitting smoking. Bear in mind that quitting smoking is better for anxiety than all medications.
