A House Suitable for Nawabs
Nawab Abdul Ghani began construction on this palace in 1859. He desired to give his family a unique home.
The palace was completed in 1872 and named Ahsan Manzil in honor of his son, Khwaja Ahsanullah.
A Cultural and Educational Setting
Ahsan Manzil was more than just a house. People gathered there to discuss books, music, and the arts. It was a major factor in the Bengali Renaissance, when Bengalis began to think differently about society and culture.
Taking on Storms and Unstable Terrain
A tornado struck the palace in 1888, causing extensive damage. Then it was rocked by another earthquake in 1897. The Nawab family put a lot of effort into repairing it and maintaining its stability each time.
From the Royal Residence to the Museum
As time passed, the palace began to deteriorate due to lack of use. The government made the decision to save it in 1985.It was restored and turned into a museum in 1992. Its history is now accessible to all.
What's Inside
Visitors can explore 23 rooms within the museum. Old paintings, furniture, and even dishes used by the Nawab family are on display. Using old photographs, some rooms depict their appearance in 1904.
